Strong earthquake in Afghanistan: at least eight dead, tremors felt as far as India
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck northern and eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan on Friday evening. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was in the Hindu Kush mountains, approximately 150 kilometers east of the city of Kunduz. AP ↗
A spokesman for the Kabul governor, Hafizullah Basharat, confirmed that a house collapsed on the outskirts of the capital, killing at least eight members of one family under the rubble. One child was injured and survived. Kabul is located approximately 290 kilometers from the epicenter. Aktuality.sk ↗
No damage or casualties have so far been reported from areas closer to the epicenter. The area is remote and mountainous, and it often takes local authorities several hours for information from the affected areas to reach Kabul. A spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Health, Sharafat Zaman, said that health facilities in both Kabul and the provinces had been placed on standby. AP ↗
The earthquake had an unusually large focal depth — approximately 190 kilometers. This is precisely what caused the tremors to be felt across a vast area spanning more than 450 kilometers, from Kabul all the way to Lahore in Pakistan. In Pakistan, tremors were felt by residents of Islamabad, Peshawar, Chitral, Swat and Shangla. No damage or injuries were immediately reported from Pakistan. Refresher.sk ↗
The tremors also reached northern India. Residents of Delhi, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Dehradun and Kashmir reported noticeable shaking that lasted several seconds. In Chandigarh, people described a strong tremor during which objects in their homes visibly moved. However, no casualties or material damage were reported from India. Bombay Samachar ↗
Afghanistan is among the countries most at risk of earthquakes. The Hindu Kush mountains lie at the collision point of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, which causes frequent and sometimes devastating tremors. In August 2025, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 in the eastern province of Kunar claimed more than 2,200 lives, and in November 2025, at least 27 people died in a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in the north of the country.
